From a Terry Eagleton article on Bono:

Bertolt Brecht tells the tale of a king in the East who was pained by all the suffering in the world. So he called his wise men together and asked them to inquire into its cause. The wise men duly looked into the matter, and returned with the news that the cause of the world's suffering was the king.

Ocean pulls me close
And whispers in my ear
The destiny I've chose
All becoming clear
The currents have their say
The time is drawing near
Washes me away
Makes me disappear
I descend from grace
In arms of undertow
I will take my place
In the great below

This song made me cry like a little baby today.

Music-- a lot of it, anyhow-- seems aimed at just that result. A shot to the heart.

MANY of the songs on "All the Roadrunning" just destroy me, especially these two:

(I caught the NIN quote right away :) ) edit, adding on: You'll appreciate this... I said to myself, oh shit, the guy is listening to NIN... hmm, but I think that's actually a fairly beautiful song, as far as things go. I better listen to it before I reply. :)

Pretty Hate Machine and Downward Spiral had some great moments but haven't done much with them since then... in the meantime, on the music and weeping note there's a few Nick Cave songs I get in my head at the moment including "Do You Love Me?" but more immediately relevant... this one's going out to Ona :)

After growing up in a family of ministers and missionaries, never ran into this remarkable bible verse before. Doesn't get cited very often I guess:
"Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?" Isaiah 43:18-19

Dunno if this is really "random"-- it may be canonical by now: The Big Lebowski.
" In the closing scenes of that film, Jeff Bridges as The Dude is talking to Sam Elliot as The Stranger in the bowling alley. As the Dude departs, clutching two beers, the Stranger says "take it easy, Dude. I know that you will." The Dude turns back, smiles, and says to the Stranger, "the Dude abides". Elliot turns to the camera and says "The Dude abides. I don't know about you, but I take comfort in that. It's good knowing he's out there, the Dude, takin' 'er easy for all us sinners."

My attention was called to this by a group email that went on to explore the meaning of "abide." And I was remembering that some translators have rendered "shamatha" as "calm abiding."

This is a very complicated case, "Kate". You know, a lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-you's. And, uh, lotta strands to keep in my head, man. Lotta strands in old Duder's head. Luckily I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, "meditation" regimen to keep my mind limber.

(sorry couldn't help it. i love this movie.)

The struggle is over. The ox and herder move in one direction effortlessly but the illusion of the subject and object still persists.
