"Self renunciation, self acceptance - these are all names for the same thing." - Alan Watts (from "Become What You Are")

Mind blown. ;)

My husband read excerpts from that book to me throughout the day, whenever he was on a break from phone calls. It's genius. Recommended.

I've been puzzling over what that quote means. I looked it up on Google, and it makes much more sense in context:

mermonkey.tumblr.com/post/1177772644/the...denial-by-alan-watts

"Some of us will always be trying—with an exasperating degree of relative success—to improve ourselves in one way or another, and no amount of self-acceptance will stop it. Self-renunciation, self-acceptance—these are all names for the same thing, for the ideal to which there is no road, the art for which there is no technique."

In other words, "Stop fighting with reality."

Which reminds of the quote from Fr. Anthony de Mello that Adyashanti likes to quote:

"Enlightenment is absolute cooperation with the inevitable."
