I'm interested in particular tips of the type and intensity of practice at the pre-stream entry level.
When would one start the "turning the light around" type practice considering the Progress of Insight Theravadin map? It has been suggested to start somewhere post A&P.
More specifically, what type of practice would be recommended as an every day adjunct to typical 1st grear type practices (samatha/vipassana balance)? The "Who am I?" repetition? What is it?
Thanks.
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
If you're interested in the Progress of Insight stuff, I think it would be best to continue to make time for vipassana (noting) practice. This seems to do the trick as far as stream-entry is concerned. However, there have been times when self-inquiry ("Who am I? What is this?") really helped to accelerate my progress. If you're looking to add self-inquiry to your practice schedule, I think you're on the right track.
I wasn't good at dwelling as the Watcher until after I had completed Second Path and was close to landing Third Path (using the Theravada Four Path model). But that doesn't mean everyone has to wait that long (quite the contrary). I practiced the Watcher frequently during Third Path, perhaps more than I did noting practice. Self-inquiry will most likely get you to the Watcher, and if you learn to cultivate it in to your daily life it can exponentially increase the amount of practice time you get in each day. I used to no-dog my drive to work, or "take no-dog for walk" during my breaks. This practice is very accessible and effective, which is why I think Kenneth is such a fan of it.
In short, if you're able to access the Watcher, practice it often. If not, stick to 1st Gear practices (samatha-vipassana) while mixing in some self-inquiry ('Who am I?"), and the Watcher will eventually make an appearance.

Edit: Fixed a typo.
