Seeking advice on graphics

I'd like to create an image of a thermometer as a way to show the 20 major strata of mind. It will be pretty straightforward... just a vertical tube with 20 gradations, each with a label and a brief comment. One of the things I want people to understand is that in each sitting as they ascend and descend the jhanic arc, they have to go through familiar territory in the lower temperatures on the way to higher territory and on the way to exploring new terrain as they work their way up the thermometer over a period of months and years. In other words, you can't skip over anything; you have to go through the "rough patches," which I think of as unstable strata of mind during every sitting. So, it doesn't do you any good to avoid unpleasant strata of mind. You have to come to terms with them, at which point they are no longer a problem.

I don't even know how to create the image, let alone how to post it to this site. Any ideas?

There are many pics of thermometers one can find on google (I googled thermometer image). They need to be edited by a picture editing program (like windows paint maybe). But there are a lot of free Open Source programs (Paint.net) on

I like to play with graphics, even if I'm not a professional, and could try to make that image, I just need some requirements: basically, label and comments for every stratum/gradation, the pixel size (h&w), preferred colors...
