Reading this letter was very thought provoking for me. (the arahat letter) In a dharma talk by Pema Chodron, I think she mentioned the Buddha advising his monks to aim their teachings toward the audience they were addressing. I don't know what the harm would be in people knowing that they can attain enlightenment within their lifetime. The levels of mind and jnana's, etc. is very confusing to me right now, but I hope to gain a better understanding through experience gained from dedicated practice. Perhaps some teachers have been concerned that giving students too much information would be confusing and possibly dangerous. However, their will always be those who are ready, who are thirsting for more. To force them into practices that restrict what they feel is their natural flow of progression or to deny what they describe out of a misplaced sense of concern, envy, or the belief that "if I can't do it, no one can" seems insane. I have more thoughts, but have huge committments tomorrow, and need sleep. It seems to me that you may deny a student knowledge, but you cannot deny them awareness if they are following the jnanic arc whether you like it as his/her teacher or not. Kenneth, as someone who has been through this, would you agree that awareness cannot be denied? It simply is, so how can you tell someone they don't have it when they are already dwelling in it? Of course this would provoke a response, and if a sangha is taught that certain types of awareness are not possible then what are the members who experience them supposed to do with their inner knowing? Are they to deny what they know is their state of being to satisfy the limitations the dharma teacher is placing on the community? This warrants more thought. Goodnight.
