eyes closed or open? was created by jhlandis
I'm at the initial stage of practice, where just following the beginning meditation instructions leads to questions. Does anyone know if Kenneth (or Kenneth if you happen to read this) recommends starting with eyes open vs closed? I sit with my eyes closed routinely, and just want to make sure that is acceptable. Thanks for any feedback. (I'm still saying rising and falling, and today may try the counting of exhalation - it feels very infantile compared to what the rest of you are doing but, hey, someone told me a 12-step motto is "compare, despair" we all have to start somewhere, right?

Hello jhlandis,
I think it is best to practice in whichever way helps you minimize distractions. I prefer to sit with my eyes closed, as I tend to get more distracted when my eyes are open. On the other hand, many prefer to sit with their eyes open because they might drift off into la-la land more easily with their eyes closed.
You may find it helpful to try both out and see which comes more naturally, and which helps you to remain alert. If you keep your eyes open, try closing them slightly. Allow just enough space to let light in.

Hi Janet,
I agree with Jackson; it's best to try both eyes open and eyes closed and see what works best for you. I've always been very experimental and opportunistic in my practice. Take a dynamic approach to this; be willing to change your technique and your orientation according to the changing circumstances of your life. Stock your "yogi toolbox" with a number of techniques that you can pull out and use as appropriate. In this way, you can always practice, whether sitting formally, driving a car, talking with friends, or sitting at the computer. The sooner you knock down the fence between the cushion and the rest of your life, the better. Your entire day is an opportunity to practice, so you'll need tools for every occasion, eyes open and eyes closed.

Kenneth, I love the way you phrased that. I've been referring to my "yogi toolbox" (collection of meditative practices) as my "spiritual repertoire". I was going to post something on that soon. Synchronicity always amuses me

Thanks so much for the advice. My natural tendency is to close my eyes, so I'll practice both and see how it affects things.

Thanks Kenneth. My "yogi toolbox" is pretty empty at the moment, and each tool I learn about is of great help. I appreciate you and Jackson taking the time to respond. As I said in reply to Jackson, I'll try both and see how things go. Again, thanks so much!!
