I was always searching for a common ground in all traditions and this is in fact the non-dual 'state'. Yet there have been many examples in every tradition like Sri Ramakrishna who started to worship a form, in his case the Mother but went beyond all form. His example was that love for God materializes as a form but can and should lead beyond all form. Seems to be the point for all religions. Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta were living that non-dual advaitic experience and were at the same time able to recognize levels in unenlightened people. To 'kill the Buddha' is taken out of context and one should see the enormous devotion of Zen-Buddhists. Surely not nihilistic ...
