Would someone be able to tell me what bystander practice is? In the meantime I've cycled through another progress of insight cycle complete with fruition. Am able to access a powerful sense of emptiness during the day where there is literally just viewing and just listening with very little me there at all. What I have noticed is, I respond with immense compassion to the simplest behaviours of others. I feel moved by people's tiny anxieties and disturbances. I've lost my feelings of intimidation with groups of unknown people and very peculiarly: I'm a high school teacher. I deal with some very difficult kids, some of whom will only respond when ones' voice is loud and intimidating enough. I have noticed that I can immitate this intimidation so to speak with my voice and body but my mind stays perfectly still. But afterward, although my mind is still, I can feel the aftermath vibrating in my body. Little ways to go yet I guess. In the meantime I'm cycllng through another misery.

Thanks for your report, Paul. I appreciate the way you said, "meanwhile I'm cycling through another misery," as though you were the sporting kind of cyclist and misery nothing more than the landscape you were passing through.
As for the bystander, Kenneth could describe it best, of course, but in my understanding the Bystander is a perspective of consciousness, cultivated through a noting practice that takes whatever is arising in the present moment as an object seen by a bystander.
So, I'll demonstrate. See how it sits. See how it feels tension, unpleasant. See how it sees. See how it writhes, unpleasant. See how it exhales, pleasant. See how it feels relief, pleasant. See how it hears. See how it remembers. See how it feels joy. See how it sits. See how it feels wetness. See how it feels warmth, pleasant. See how it worries. See how it feels softness, pleasant. See how it feels embarrassment. See how it ignores. See how it feels amusement, pleasant. See it how it investigates. See how it feels tension, unpleasant.
As with other practices, whatever's happening for you throughout is the basis, of course, but beginning with the posture is a nice neutral anchor in the present. And, importantly, other sensations become immediately apparent with ease from that starting point.

Thank you both for your reply. Thanks Chris for the link to strawman. It makes sense. During the day bystander is very accessible for me, the sense of interior infinite space. While sitting, I move into Witness. Thanks.
