With regard to developing the existing schema of the 3ST, how about this:

There is a development beyond 3rd gear, which is the discovery that the 3 speed transmission is an automatic.

Kenneth, I'm not very confident this comment means much, but...

I think before you add anything new it would be good to consider what, if any, the traditional sources say about direct perception mode. The power of the 3 gears is that, however novel, they are also traditionally grounded.

My own sense, having listened to what you are reporting, is that a lot of talk that traditional spiritual teachers have given us about losing their sense of self, total abandonment of karma, and other attainments that many moderns have decided are mythology might very well need to be reconsidered. Back on the table. Could it be that many of them had actually gone into something like 4th gear all along? My guess is that if you have, many of them probably have too. Biology being universal and all that implies.

My own reflection: In practicing the lava lamp just a bit, my hit is that the practice itself of grounding energies back in the body is very well known by the Tantric traditions. It's something I've done for years, though not nearly to the degree you or others do and with much less skill. I actually saw one teacher--Sally Kempton, who runs in Integral circles--mention it in an article the other day. My guess would strongly be that some of the traditional teachers followed it to the fullest extent, the way you are doing. So maybe what is old is new again?

Alex, I have been thinking of the PCE (#2 in your numbering scheme) as a subset of Direct Perception mode, with the distinction being the difference between pushing and pulling. Initially, to enter DPM, you apply the techniques or the lightning rod, toll booth, and deadman switch. That is "push." Then, you allow one of the five physical senses to draw you deeper into DPM. This is "pull." "Seeing like an artist," for example, uses the visual sense to pull you further into DPM, into the state of what you call the PCE.

Your #3, "permanent loss of all filters" is hypothetical to me, so I cannot include it in my teaching schema. I feel open to all possibilities; so far these developments feel completely organic. In other words, everything that has happened feels like the natural continuation of everything that has happened before, with all stages resting on what has gone before. If it happens to me that all filters are permanently lost, I will report that and find a way to include it in my teaching.

As an aside, my working assumption is that direct perception mode cannot be stabilized without the prerequisite of 4th Path.

Also, about models of enlightenment: one of the basic tenets in my head has always been that enlightenment does not change the basic born-in nature of the human being. That's a model. In my head. A concept. A map. The reality may be very, very different. So if direct mode is indeed a developmental phase, and unlike other paths and attainments it actually does change the tenor of one's emotional experience, maybe even **permanently**, then the map I have had in my head is definitely NOT the territory.

It is in that sense that Chuck's comment ("I don't know is a good way to proceed") makes a huge amount of sense.
