Nana, Jhana. A question? was created by RevElev
A Question on nanas and jhanas. Some of them are the same strata of mind, first jhana and nana, A&P and 2nd jhana, etc. So are they the same experience? or different ways of experiencing the same strata? Can you experience one but not the other (A&P but not 2nd jhana for instance)? Or are they 2 sides of the same coin? I've read the articles on these here(and elsewhere) but still am unclear on these questions, maybe I missed something. Thanks in advance, and hope you're all having great weekends.

Howdy Rev-
Tho I'm not an advanced practitioner, I have been studying the exact same theme lately and thought I'd pitch in my two cents.
When I asked Kenneth a very similar question during conversation a little while back, he said that samatha and vipassana are indeed just different ways of observing the same territory. To paraphrase, he said that in samatha, one is exploring with a flashlight, and in vipassana, one is exploring with a brighter strobe light. So yeah, when you are experienceing A&P, you are in the same "place" as you are while absorbed in 2nd jhana... Just via a different kind of light source.
A lot of things fell into place after hearing it put this way, and in my own practice, the correlation between nanas and jhanas was made much more explicitly clear.
I'm sure others could say a lot more, but hope this helps out a bit.
All the best,
G.
