Shamatha Q: use what is already strong or improve what is weak?

OK - I had this idea that since my visual concentration/stability is very weak since I am a visual thinker (or some other reason?), that doing Kasina might round me out somehow - however I find it almost impossible to generate any good vibes off of a visual object....

I do, however already have a spot an inch below where the collarbones come together that almost instantly generates good vibes, and sometimes causes me to separate from thinking and see rays of light...

Silly question I suppose but is there *any* known benefit that anyone here has had from training their weakness instead of focusing on their strength? I was a bit worried that I was getting sucked into some unwholesome/addictive state with that 'spot' of mine so I kinda stopped using it. Might it be wise to develop it strongly instead? It seemed to be so full of joy/rapt that there wasnt room for any real stability on an object, but maybe I need to develop that further... dont know?

thanks guys

Take what you're good at as far as you can. Write a journal entry about each time you do it. Try to describe the sensations you feel over the course of the sit.

Have fun! Be scientific!

Hi WSH3

The answer depends on what do you want. Do you want to feel good during your sitting time or do you want to be free from suffering? Concentration practises like kasina are good for the former. On the other hand, if you do insight practises, your sittings may not always be nice, but in the end it no longer matters to you.
