I'm having a problem downloading the pdf file
www.shinzen.org/Retreat%20Reading/Getting%20the%20Lingo.pdf
into my kindle. If I just download it, the format gets screwed up. For instance, some lines are only one letter of a word. The print is also too small. I then ran it through Calibre thinking I could get larger print and solve the formatting. But had no luck. How would you do this to get good formatting and readable print?

I'm not familiar with the Kindle but I quickly checked out some info there, which version are you using? Apparently there's a firmware update for version 2 which supports PDF. It definitely sounds like a formatting error, hopefully you get it sorted.

Jack, in my experience the best way to read PDFs on the Kindle is to convert them using Amazon's service. Check out this link:
www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display....eId=200375630email
It explains how to set up the email service. You just email the PDF to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with "Convert" in the body, and it'll send you the converted file which you can then transfer using USB. You can also send it to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. which will send it directly to your Kindle for a fee.
This method is far from perfect but a big improvement compared to reading PDFs natively. Most of the time this fixes the font size issue.

The firmware I have does support pdf. Also, I do use the Amazon conversion service as you explained, Nadav. However, the problem with formating and font size remains.

Jack,
You can use the MobiPocket Creator (availbale at www.mobipocket.com )to convert PDFs to the Kindle format; it does a good enough job.

Ahh. In that case I don't know. I've come across a couple of PDFs that still have this problem even after converting through Amazon too.

Eric, I downloaded MobiPocket Creator and I don't think it will open PDF files. Maybe I am missing something.
The file above I am trying to convert is Shinzen Young on noting. If interested and have a Kindle or any ereader, you might try converting it and see what happens. I notice Calibre has a setting that controls the font size in the output but I can't make this work.
Thanks everyone for responding to this.

What ended up working best for me is as follows. I opened the pdf file in Adobe Reader and exported it as a txt file. I opened this file in Word and changed the font and font size. I saved it as a rtf file and sent it to Amazon. It now works fine in my Kindle.
