Hi,
as you may know, I am trying my luck with this noting thing, and I hope you guys care to give some input!
I've been noting aloud, without following the breath, KFD-style almost 100% exclusively daily for something like 10 months or so now.
Today I began like this, and then switched midway to noting traditional mahasi style, i.e. rising, falling of the abdomen.
I noticed differences.
When I note Mahasistyle, I tend to focus more, when an itch appears, I stay with it and investigate it for a long time.
When I note KFD-style, I note the itching, then the imaging thought, then back to the itching, then the curiosity, then back to the itching, etc...
KFD-style the way I do it is whac-a-mole, where a mole protrudes, I whack it, but then at times that same mole just stays out, but I whack another mole that comes out, and then back to the first (the same pain or itch that was mole #1), and maybe a third mole rears its face and so on. Several moles may be out at the same time and even after being whacked...
Mahasistylie I just notice that first mole for a long while, then back to the breath, then next mole, sometimes not even labeling those other concurrent moles.
Which one of these is 'being present'?
Both occur now, right?
(BTW, I believe I had a clearer A&P-like moment during this Mahasistyle-session than I've had for weeks, but that could be just up to individual sits-differences)
Thanks for your thoughts!
And may you all be present...
(edited for clarification)

Both work obviously as folks have had success with both approaches. I really think you should try out the mahasi for a while. Working within both perspectives should give you more of a feel for what is the same in both and should help you in the future regardless with which one you continue to use.

I'm still a beginner but I notice certain things more clearly with the mahasi style, and concentration seems to benefit more, but I seem to catch alot more stuff doing the note everything and 4F's approach, subtle thoughts and desires/impulses. There are times when one or the other seems to get dry somehow, like things stop changing, and I have been switching methods when that happens - no idea if thats a bad idea or not. I'm not sure I have ever had an A&P with the mahasi approach though - my concentration still needs some work I think.

Thanks, Mu!
Normally I don't like to switch tools (from the toolbox) too often, but I think I will.
See what I find.

From my trial yesterday, I believe that this is so for me too.
And also concentrationwise when doing mahasi.
I believe the switching may work for you!
Will see what trying the other style for a while will do for me.
