Breathing patterns Shifts through the Nanas was created by rocketbuddha
During a 20 day retreat I had a lot of time to focus on review cycles. I noticed distinct breathing patterns in each nana, and even within nanas, that I used to discern where I was in an insight cycle. Maybe this occurs only in my particular case, or perhaps this is well known knowledge or even I am over analyzing things. Regardless to these objections I had to posting this information I hope it may prove helpful to other meditators'¦'¦
From Nana to Nana: The breath starts out in a sharp 'sawtooth' wave form in mind and body and progressively becomes smoother and smoother until, at A and P nana, the breath is a perfect 'sine' waveform.
Similarly from Fear up to Equanimity, the breath being a sharp sawtooth wave in Fear and a perfect sine wave in Equanmitmity. In Misery, Disgust and Desire for Deliverance the breathing pattern becomes smoother than the preceding nana.
Dissolution and Reobservation stand on their own as the breathing pattern in those nanas are distinct 'square' wave forms.
Within the Nana: When I first transfer to the next nana my breathing action comes soley from the diaphragm muscles. As things progress overtime within the nana the breathing action balances between the diaphragm and chest muscles. Approaching the end of a particular nana I find that the natural breath is powered only from the chest muscles.
I hope this may prove useful to someone besides myself.
