Noting Out Loud vs Silently was created by Hopeful_Seeker
I noted that I note noting more often when I note out loud. Which is to say that it seems like the sound of my voice tends to take my attention when I speak my notes. Is this more useful than not falling into a chain of notes about noting? I usually fall into silently noting objects, and note out loud when one fails to pass quickly. Is that less effective than noting out loud constantly? I am interested in people's opinions on this matter.

Personally when I did noting I only did outloud noting, and there were times when I found there was this layering of noting: the perception, the recognition of the label of the object, speaking the word describing it, the sensation of that word as it was spoken, and then again as it hit my ears, and so on. To my mind all objects are noteworthy, even your befuddlement at having them nest like Russian dolls, the laughter that provokes, the thought that you are now going in circles, etc etc. Matters not. It's the attention to whatever's going on in the moment that is key. Caveat that I only did noting practice for some months before switching to "just sitting" so others may have more detailed observations, better tips based on their own experience, etc. about that specific method.

For me, nothing beats noting out loud when my mind wanders. I wish I had known about it long ago, when I was trying to get started and couldn't even count three breaths without going off into some fantasy. Every week I find myself noting out loud, sometimes for entire sessions. I often have to whisper because I live in a full house. My kids probably think ol' Dad is crazy, sitting alone in the basement, muttering to himself.

Noting is merely a feedback mechanism to ensure you stay on task (I realize I may be oversimplifying things with that statement). If you find you go off track often when noting internally, it is suggested that you note out loud.

I have done both depending on the condition of the mind / what I felt to be most useful at the time.

Don't beat yourself up over the choice you make, but also don't be afraid to try both for a time and get a feel for when it's appropriate FOR YOU to use either option.
