I thought the first two minutes of this scene from Limitless was an uncanny simulation of the contrast between depression and the recognition of awareness (at least in my experience).
I especially like around 1:50 as the focus zooms out to be panoramic and the lady becomes one object among many in the entire scene:

I thought exactly the same when I saw the movie.

When it showed the zipper and ring I was like YUP (not to mention the periphery coming into view as orasis points out)!

I should correct myself that the calibrating instructions are Brightness, *Looseness*, and Lucidity.

That's exactly what the shift into the Fourth Jhana looks like for me when my eyes are open.
The Third is kinda dark, sleepy, and foggy (though I wouldn't call it depressing -- it's pleasant, like relaxing in a comfortable bed at night). Then the shift into the Fourth causes everything to become bright, lucid, and panoramic. The brightness is literal, like turning up the lights on a dimmer switch or like the sun coming out from behind clouds. And there's something highly stimulating and alert about the Fourth, even though the mind is deeply tranquilized. Just like how guy becomes both calmer and more alert when the drug hits.
