The other thing I have found useful is to study the relationship you have to the question. You might say "I just want to know that this is going to work." or "I just want to be sure I wont' end up being a crazy dude if I do this practice." or "I don't want to do a practice that requires giving up my attachment to logic and reason." That inquiry can shed some interesting light.

"Why do you practice mindfulness meditation then?" -- Gary

Because it will eventually, maybe sooner rather than later, make a big difference in your life. It has in mine. But Gary, it's not free. YOu have to do something to get there and "there" is not what you probably think it is.

Now, my turn to ask a few questions:

Did you think you could end your suffering without making some big changes in your life? Did you think some "it" would just happen for in a second, like waving a magic wand, and then you'd be eternally happy and free but not have to change anything to get there? Really?

;-)

Thanks, gira. I like your last suggestion. I notice after I release identification with one reason to practice, then I start thinking of another reason to practice.
I always question my assumptions and beliefs, because they seem to confine me, but practice comes natural to me.
I think I need to continue practice AND I need to question every assumption.
