Is this a (non-)descrption of Awareness or just madness? was created by StianGH
Hello goodfolk. I'm currently in an uplifted mood as I just had a good, long, heartfelt laugh about something. I don't know how valid this thing is, so I come here to get myself tested. Deluded or spot on?
Awareness is nothing!
It's not a quality, it is not luminosity, it does not pervade anything anywhere. It an empty word that denotes, without description or explaination, that there is such a thing as awareness.
Awareness is just what it is. You know what it is. It's you being aware. The thing that makes you aware - that's awareness. But it's not a thing, it's nowhere to be found (and also, there's no 'you'). The word 'awareness', it's not an attempt to explain or describe who or what is aware, or how anything is aware or how it is to be aware. Because there is no such thing. It's inexplicable, unexplainable. No one has come up with an explaination for why there is awareness, why I am aware or why you are aware, or whether a stone is aware or not, and how that would possibly be like.
It's an absolute surrender, "I give up trying to explain it!" - it's impossible to explain or describe. Stop trying to figure out what it is - it's nothing, it doesn't exist. No one ever tried to explain to you what awareness is or what it is not. We just call it awareness because we are aware, but we can't explain it.
There's nothing to understand or see here. Move along.

It is empty - Bingo!
There is no separate awareness yet we are aware.

It's hilarious! I'm still sceptical, I'll see how long it sticks. If it doesn't stick, it was still worth the laugh. If it sticks... LOL!
Edited to add that I've been jumping in and out of jhanas (or whatever those distinct perspective/attentional shifts are) after this, which is new to me. Especially been going in and out of what I believe is the fourth jhana; probably as a result of having worked a lot on 'the open state' (wide open attentional mode) lately. I'll see what sticks...

I do find it interesting, however, that there can be self-aware phenomena...

I think awareness sort of takes the "form" of whatever it is aware of - so maybe when we say "self-aware phenomena" it''s a funny way to sneak a duality back in where there really just isn't one
