Skillfully the 3 characteristics: A few questions. was created by KeithStrand
Hi There,
So how does one go about skillfully being aware of the 3 Characteristics?
While on retreat i was wondering if the way I go about being aware of the 3 is similar to anyone else's.
Or if I'm being skillful in the way I experience the 3.
So when scanning for sensations I find myself saying, "hey that sensation was not there before. " and then , " hey where did it go? it's gone!" equating this with being mindful of impermanence. I don't always make verbal mental notes of it
when I'm scanning but I will remind myself from time to time. And other times be simply mindful of change at any sense door.
I also sometimes think ," I didn't make that sensation appear or disappear so where am " I " in all this? "
this being my no-self realization thought.
And then I guess to get the suffering in there I ponder the following -
If things are truly arising and passing this fast without my control and this craving and aversion are hooked up to this system directly, I'm kinda screwed aren't I?
I mean this is a loosing proposition suffering in the curliest sense. A wheel turning with a slap and a feather one after the other. unpleasant neutral pleasant - round and round...
So for years I used to think that sitting and scanning vipassana Goenka style and just being aware of sensations equanimously would in some way without me formulating a thought about it bring me to the same conclusion, the same insight. That my " subconscious " would experience these truths and I would benefit from that.
While doing the noting practice however I
note unpleasant neutral pleasant so am I being equanimous if I'm noting unpleasant neutral pleasant?
