Link to a talk by Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw given to his disciples on their induction into Vipassana meditation. Enjoy!

Agreed, this is indeed pretty good. Thanks for posting this, Don.
It's a well-done straight-up reading of the transcribed talk in Mahasi Sayadaw's "Practical Vipassana Exercises." See www.buddhanet.net/pdf_file/mahasit1.pdf .
A good follow up read would be "The Progress of Insight"

Wasn't there a new translation being done not that long ago. I remember seeing something on the DhO. Any ideas on what happened, or if it was ever finished?

I'm not sure what happened to it. Back in 2010, this article appeared on Buddhist Geeks:
www.buddhistgeeks.com/2010/04/the-practi...a-of-mahasi-sayadaw/
I found a sample chapter in the fifth post here: dharmaoverground.org/web/guest/discussio...oards/message/443445
This is how the sample chapter is titled:
MANUAL OF INSIGHT
Volume 2, Cha 5
By Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw
Translated by Hla Myint
and AriyaÑÄni
Edited by Steve Armstrong, Kamala Masters
And Deborah Ratner-Helzer
Pali Research by ViraÑÄni
Eighth edition: May 2010
Excerpted for Buddhist Geeks

"Thank you for your interest in the Manual of Insight by Mahasi Sayadaw. You are correct, I and a team of folks are nearly complete in our preparation of the ms to submit to a publisher. We have spent the past year finalizing the research into documentation of all the (597) Pali quotes in the ms and creating a number of Appendices not in the original that will be needed by Western readers to understand what Mahasi S. takes for granted that all informed readers will know, but in the West do not. Finally, a few remaining technical translation questions emerged that have been researched and changes are being made in the 'hot copy' in Burma. I expect to receive the final '˜hot copy' to add the Appendices to sometime this month. I'll be submitting the entire ms. to Wisdom first and hope they are interested in publishing. I will keep your inquiry on file for notification when publishing decisions are made. Again, thank you for your interest.
Ciao,
Steve"
This is from an email Steve Armstrong sent me on 02 FEB. The Buddhist Geeks sample chapter was a sneak preview of how excellent the new translation is going to be like. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy!

Wow! I had been wondering what had happened to "the Manual." Hadn't heard anything about it in a long time. I had assumed the project had stalled or been dropped. This is terrific news. Thanks for sharing it with us.

No problem. I had read about it on Buddhist Geeks and searched a couple of forums for info on the release date but didn't find anything recent so I decided to find out from the source. It would be sweet if it came out this year. I will keep the forum updated if I get any more info.

Thanks for the update on the Manual! I guess can stop bugging JGroove about it now, I email him every few months and ask: when, when, when...
I don't think this book is going to be million seller, but it's gonna be a treasure to those who find it, and I for one ain't gonna miss it!
That was a good mp3 also, thanks for that.

Just reading Chapter 5 was a huge help in my practice, so I feel you on the when, when, when, lol.
Who knows, it might turn out to be a million seller, if you consider that many Western practitioners practice Vipassana Mahasi style or practice styles based on the noting technique.
