A wandering mind was created by LocoAustriaco
While a wandering mind has been shown to be related to unhappiness (see gilbert et alt.) it seems to have positive effects also, which would explain why it exists. recent studies show how it works for creativity, long time memory and problem solving:

It also seems to be related to REM-Sleep (see works of John Kounios) and its positive effects on the brain.

None of the results of the studies fit into my personal experience: I am not necessarily unhappy with a wandering mind nor am I less creative in a state of no-ego. Would be interested what others say..

Hi Loco,
I used have a stupendously wandering mind which took me away from relationships and what was in front of me. Great for writing though as I was always imagining stuff. Didn't find wandering mind helpful when I was feeling down or angry or in need of just imagining a little longer to feel better before going to sleep, only that I couldn't turn it off. No, with my mind comparatively still, I am actually much happier, grounded and more creative because I am more focused and use mental energy more efficiently. For some reason I'm getting better at maths and writing and I'm getting better at being nice too!

now, thats interesting and sounds familiar to me. it seems that the wandering mind can only solve problems, which were created by it before LOL ...
