Would you order Mahasi's "Manual of Insight"?

Greetings. Some of you might remember this article I wrote a couple of years ago for the now-defunct Buddhist Geeks magazine.

www.buddhistgeeks.com/2010/04/the-practi...a-of-mahasi-sayadaw/

Steve e-mailed me recently to say that a potential publisher wants to get a sense for whether there's really a market for this book. If you'd buy it--and let's go ahead and assume it'll be a little more expensive than your usual feel-good dharma book as it's a longish translation with lots of footnotes and even a section in Pali--if you could respond to this thread with an "I'll buy it," I'd appreciate it. Steve says a head count sample of interested readers like this could help get the book published.

Lastly, the 5th chapter of the translation is available as a PDF on the DhO at the link below. Just look through the thread and you'll see the links in there.

When it comes out I'm gonna buy it, definitely. Don Loristo posted something about "the Manual" a while back at this thread:

As you can see there's an appetite for more on/from the Ven. Mahasi Sayadaw.

From your article:

"Western dharma students have long been accustomed to Buddhist books and talks that amount to an admixture of inspirational poetry, psychological analysis, riffs on current events, and freestyle borrowing from any number of spiritual traditions."

Sounds exactly like my experience with MBSR.

This is something I would have loved to have use of earlier in my practice. I remember downloading chapter 5 from your link and the instructions for mindfulness in daily activities were very helpful. Thanks for posting that! Funny (sad?) thing is that my teacher at that time (who was a long time student of U Pandita), discouraged me from following those instructions because "that's really just for monastics and people on retreat." WTH? I ignored her suggestion and practiced it anyway.

This is a book I have a strong interest in, and would consider buying, but I wonder how useful it would be for people on the middle paths.

Hell's yes I would buy it! I'd even support a Kickstarter campaign for it.

Joel, I re-read your fantastic BG article on the train coming back from my last retreat, and it really fired me up about continuing the momentum of practice. I can't wait to read the book.

A good source for free, and legal, meditation books that I've been using for a while is :

It has several books by Mahasi Sayadaw.
They have a lot of books on different subjects of a spiritual nature.

And to answer the question, no, I wouldn't buy the book.
