Hi,
Does anyone here - or has anyone - experienced 'Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response' (ASMR)? For anyone who doesn't know what the heck I'm on about, ASMR is a pleasurably euphoric feeling, usually a tingle which traverses (mostly but not always) from the crown of the head downwards. Please google for more info if anyone is still stumped about this. ASMR is similar to music tingles, or 'frisson'. I've had bouts of ASMR since I was a boy, and is usually triggered by emotionally charged music, sometimes it is breathtakingly pleasurable. Could ASMR be related to Jhana? It would be great to hear anyone else's input on the matter and get a discussion going. Thanks - Ranger (P.S. I'm new here, great site)

I believe I've experienced ASMR. In my experience, the tingling itself is not pleasurable (though it may seem that way), but, at the same time as the tingling starts, the areas that tingle tend to be perceived more clearly, with less "blockages" and other gross sensations, and this reduction in gross experiences in those areas (which I have found to be dependent on a kind of craving or resistance) can certainly be "breathtakingly" good.
The major thing I see this related to is insight practice: the more you do, the more your body is perceived clearly and without negative stuff. (More clear for one who does body-oriented insight practices, probably.) Same kind of result, but AMSR is temporary, insight is permanent.

I got a real clear experience of it at a concert listening to Beethoven's 3rd piano concerto, at the end of the first movement, where the orchestra slips back in after the cadenza. Check it out; it's magic!
p.s. I've always loved that passage, but until I did this practice I never so clearly experienced my physical response to it.

I always associated these sort of sensations with "Piti" or raptures, they often arise while listening to music that moves me on some deep level, that is exhilarating or blissful. Piti or raptures also occur for me in practice / jhana / as a factor of absorption.

EDIT: with music I generally only experience "weak" rapture, the goosebump, hair standing type. jhana factor piti is much deeper and more powerful for me.
