KFD Meetups

Not long ago a few of us who happened to be in the Chicago area started to meet once a month to chat face to face. It has been a great experience, and now that I've moved, I really miss it. I have realized how powerful it is to have sangha to connect with face to face.

This thread is for people who would like to meet with other KFD members. If you are interested in meeting others please post your location and invite others in the area to contact you. Feel free to arrange meetups on the thread.

I would love to meet up face to face with KFD members but alas I am in Santiago, Chile for another 6 or so months then back to Australia. If anyone is in Chile, I'd love to meet up for a chat. I have 3 months of vacation time at the moment, and a part from writing stuff and meditating and exploring and progressing on the path in that time, I'd love to shoot the shiat with anyone on skype:

We've had three different KFDers, myself included, come to our vipassana sitting group in Atlanta. For anyone in the Atlanta area, it's called Sandy Springs Insight Meditation. If you go to Meetup.org and do a search, you'll find it. For the most part, the tenor and tone of this group is sort of in line with IMC. However, we've discussed Kenneth's work at times and have gone into Mahasi noting a bit.

I'm in Montreal- how about a meetup in the Magdalene Islands ?

I am in Louisiana now but in a few days I will return to the Houston area for a week before going to scotland to be with my family for Christmas. After that I will most likely spend a little time traveling Europe. If anyone is near any of those areas and would like to meet up PM me.

P.S. Meeting the Sangha face to face is a special experience. I greatly enjoyed staying at Owen's pad in NYC and meeting Kenneth at the tuesday night group...

I didn't know you lived in Newfoundland! Have you heard of a huge engineering project (Generation and transmission) that is to start early next year? The company I work for will be doing all the engineering for the power delivery sector and is sending dozen of engineers there for the job up there. I'll probably will be working on the project from Chicago, but may get to go up there a couple of time during the duration of the project.
If I do, we can establish the KFDh Newfoundland Chapter!!

I'd love to meet up once I get to the States one day, although that day is still looking far.

Joel, I've been thinking weekly or occasional open-invitation Skype teleconferences would be good. The way it works on Skype is that whoever starts the conference rings up the others, so we could just have people send in their skypenames in advance if they wanted to attend. It would give me a chance to answer questions and connect with members I haven't yet talked to in addition to keeping up with the old-timers. And the community-building aspect of it would be great.

Why don't we set up a time which is good for most people on the forum and try one?

I'd love a to try a group skype session! It may take a few to get the hang of it but it would be worth a try.

People's schedules are nuts these days. It would be cool if the discussions could be audio-recorded and posted here on the site, so that those of us who can't be in on the calls live can get to hear them nonetheless.

I forgot to put my own current location in here: Kailua HI. If anyone is around here or will be visiting the islands, let me know.

It would probably be best to do the skype thing on a weekend I think, and it would be expected that lots of people that want to join won't have the time open. Still, it would be worth it.

One question though - should it be a group conversation or a dharma talk? I would lean toward having a dharma talk because then we could have a little structure at least for the first one, giving everyone a chance to participate while learning the hang of it.

That being said - Kenneth, would you be in to give a dharma talk? At least to start the group off. From there it would likely turn into a conversation with a lot of questions and observations.

I hear you Adam. It's time for me to tinkle or get off the potty. Let's do this! The first step is proof of concept. Let's do one this week just to test the system. It's okay if only a few people can make it: if it works we'll do some more. In fact, I'd like to deliberately limit the number of participants this first time.

Here it is: I will be on Skype for a one-hour teleconference at 10:00am New York time this Thursday, the 9th of December. I know that's a bad time for working people in the Americas and for Oceana and Asia in general, but it's a good time for Europe and the Middle East, so it's a trade-off. We can try various times and days of the week as we work out the kinks.

I'm going to cap it at seven participants including myself. First come, first served. If you would like participate, email me at kennethfolkdharma at gmail dot com with your Skypename. I will email you back to let you know if you are one of the first six and if so you will get a Skype call at the appointed hour to invite you to join the conference. We'll see how it flies. Not yet sure of the format. Maybe a bit of a dharma talk to start, maybe not, but definitely lots of time for Q&A about your practice, the stages of insight, maps of enlightenment, etc. In order keep it orderly, let's discourage cross-talk between participants; address your comments and questions to me rather than the other members so that we can hope to give everyone a chance to comment or ask questions during the session.
