"At present, two kinds of teaching of the doctrine of dependent origination exist. One distorts the Buddha Dhamma, and it has existed for more than a thousand years. The other is in accord with the Buddha Dhamma, and it teaches awareness of Contacts at the sense bases to prevent Feeling from advancing to Craving. In this way, the doctrine of dependent origination can be practiced to reap the results at once. The truth is if ordinary people can practice in this manner, they can have significant achievements even without referring to the law of dependent arising. A serious practitioner should be wary of the confusion from these two kinds of teaching, and ensure that his cultivation is in accord with the Buddha Dhamma. The nature of dependent origination, as taught by the Buddha, upholds neither nihilism - for instance, encouraging people to abstain from performing meritorious deeds, be irresponsible, be troublesome and reckless - nor the concept of a continuing existence; for instance, advocating people to be extremists, to be deluded with the concept of an eternally existing ego or all forms of ego and ego possessiveness. The doctrine of dependent origination is not an exaggerated theory as generally believed. On the contrary, it entails rigorous cultivation such that when there is Contact in the sense base, Right Mindfulness is applied to subjugate Feeling, thus preventing its advance to Craving, Clinging, and Existence/Birth. In actual practice, a term such as 'dependent origination' is unnecessary. "

Via contemplating the last thread here on rigpa, I seem to have done something permanent to my experience. I can tune into it (what I'm taking to be rigpa) in a direct way whenever I put my mind to it, and at all times some aspect of it seems to permeate the experience.

I'm noticing a huge dropoff in suffering - especially in reactivity, but also in the way of boredom and restlessness. I have been in several fairly heated discussions since and just find myself having little reaction (other than surprise at my lack of reaction).

It feels like a game changer. Currently I'm working on deepening whatever this is.

In any event it seems to have made life much better.

Yay!

Fun Practice Idea - Manjushri's Sword (fancy noting technique)

Imagine a sword
use it to cut through anything that comes into your awareness
when nothing is left to cut, cut the one who noticed there was nothing left to cut

Awesome technique. I actually practiced a Manjusri Tantra last year, not quite as simple as this but the 2 edge sword was also there ;)

I've started reading the text by Bhikkhu Buddhadasa yesterday and it's nice to read the same logic we discussed on Skype last time. (birth and death having a different meaning ... etc ...)

Yes - it seems to work on several levels. Best to find a way to make it applicable and useful in your own practice.

Hey, Jayson, who is the person in the video? I can't seem to find his name anywhere. Does he have a website with any other content?

Andy,

His name is Daniel. I haven't seen anything other than his youtube channel, although I'm aware that he has posted some stuff on the DHO.

He's pretty accessible (if you have a youtube account).

I like him.

Flight of the Garuda (Song 6 by Shabkar Tsokdrug Rangdrol)

E-ma-ho!

Listen again, fortunate heart-children!
That which is widely renowned as mind, does anyone have it? No one has it!

What is it the source of? It is the source of samsara and nirvana and their myriad joys and sorrows.

What is it believed to be? There are many beliefs according to the various vehicles.

What is it called? It is named in countless different ways.

All ordinary people call it I.
Some non-Buddhists call it Self.
Shravakas call it "individual egolessness."
The Mind Only School label it Mind.
Some call it Prajnaparamita, [that is,] "transcendent knowledge."

Some label it Sugatagarbha, [that is,] Buddha-nature.
Some name it Mahamudra.
Some give it the name Madhyamika.
Some say "the single sphere."
Some name it Dharmadhatu, [that is,] realm of phenomena.
Some call it the name alaya, "ground of all."
Some call it "ordinary mind."

Despite the innumerable names that are tagged onto it,
Know that the real meaning is as follows:

Let your mind spontaneously relax and rest.
When left to itself, ordinary mind is fresh and naked.
If observed, it is a vivid clarity without anything to see,
A direct awareness, sharp and awake.
Possessing no existence, it is empty and pure,
A clear openness of non-dual luminosity and emptiness.

It is not permanent, since it does not exist at all.
It is not nothingness, since it is vividly clear and awake.
It is not oneness, since many things are cognised and known.
It is not plurality, since the many things known are inseparable in one taste.
It is not somewhere else; it is your own awareness itself.
The face of this Primordial Protector, dwelling in your heart,
Can be directly perceived in this very instant.
Never be separated from it, children of my heart!

If you want to find something greater than this in another place,
It's like going off searching for footprints although the elephant is right there.
You may scan the entire three-thousand-fold universe,
But it is impossible that you will find more than the mere name of Buddha.

This is the song which indicates the natural state of the main practice.

No probs at all. Figured you missed my post.
Fact is I quite rarely log in here nowadays.
Sort of don't see the point in journaling right now, not much to report, and when I did noone interacted lately, so i think my journal was saturated with repetetive reports :-D

checked in and thought I'd do a shoutout to you!
Keep up the good work :-)

I'm available outside of this forum if you'd like to work together on your meditation. PM me if you like or whatever. In any case - good to hear from you again.

Spent some time noting the 6 sense bases (seeing, hearing, feeling, thinking, smelling, tasting).

I noticed that this is a really great way to notice the absence of a doer. There is merely spontaneously arising phenomenon in the various streams of consciousness.

It's a weird thing to see in real time.

The mind does not know how to liberate itself.
By going beyond its own limits it experiences unwinding.
From deep confusion it drops knowing.
From intense suffering comes releasing.
From complete exhaustion comes resting.
All these go in cycle perpetually repeating,
Till one realizes everything is indeed already liberated,
As spontaneous happening from before beginning.

Having some good luck playing around with the 3 gears (well more so arranging a series of practices in a logical order inspired by Kenneth's wonderful system)

Been doing 4 foundations noting (seeming to only be getting brahmaviharas now as mindstates - we'll see how long that lasts)

followed by dwelling in the witness

then grounding any tension inherent in the witness (direct mode grounding)

I then do the sweet spot practice that Nick describes on the hamilton project blog (seems to work well as I move the center of gravity down from the witness to the heart - often spending some time being vulnerable to any remaining tension as per villums instructions - then to the hara where I allow "energy" to collect and then down to the sweet spot)

I then notice that I am always aware and allow that realization to deepen (effort is not required to be aware)

I then do seeing as an artist (this is far more effective after the proceeding practices than it has been for me in a while).

Happy Halloween everyone!

Metta!

Ok weird. The brahmavihara thing is still sticking. My usual pre-work anxiety was quite odd as there were a few body sensations and thoughts but when I noted mindstates there was actually equanimity, compassion, metta, and mudita.

This is awesome :)
